Fighting Unwanted Cat Calls, One Poster At A Time

It’s hard to go unnoticed in New York City, with everyone checking out the latest fashions and hairstyles. As the weather warms, some women who are shedding those winter layers are finding themselves the object of more cat calls, whistles and roving eyes than they’d like.

Artist Tatayana Fazlalizadeh is not going to take it anymore.

Under the cover of darkness, wearing a black knit hit, black leather jacket and black Chuck Taylors, Fazlalizadeh is nearly invisible. She’s scouring Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, for a blank canvas.

“This is one of those spaces that I’m not sure about if it’ll work,” Fazlalizadeh says. “I might put this up and tomorrow morning it’ll be taken down because it’s somebody’s property. I don’t know, but we’re going to try it anyway.”

The 27-year-old takes a long look down the street for police, then reaches into a plastic grocery bag and pulls out a blue water bottle. She squirts down a blank wall with wheat paste and slaps up one of her trademark posters. It features a stark pencil drawing of a young woman staring sternly with the words below in bold type: “Women are not seeking your validation.” [Continue reading and listen to the story on NPR.]

Building Houses out of Chicken Legs: Black Women, Food, and Power by Psyche A. Williams-Forson

Chicken—both the bird and the food—has played multiple roles in the lives of African American women from the slavery era to the present. It has provided food and a source of income for their families, shaped a distinctive culture, and helped women define and exert themselves in racist and hostile environments. Psyche A. Williams-Forson examines the complexity of black women’s legacies using food as a form of cultural work. While acknowledging the negative interpretations of black culture associated with chicken imagery, Williams-Forson focuses her analysis on the ways black women have forged their own self-definitions and relationships to the “gospel bird.”

Exploring material ranging from personal interviews to the comedy of Chris Rock, from commercial advertisements to the art of Kara Walker, and from cookbooks to literature, Williams-Forson considers how black women arrive at degrees of self-definition and self-reliance using certain foods. She demonstrates how they defy conventional representations of blackness in relationship to these foods and exercise influence through food preparation and distribution. Understanding these phenomena clarifies how present interpretations of blacks and chicken are rooted in a past that is fraught with both racism and agency. The traditions and practices of feminism, Williams-Forson argues, are inherent in the foods women prepare and serve.

Self Portrait 2013

I’ve had this canvas with a painting I never liked already painted on it, but I wanted to cover it and was too scared. It’s a large canvas and I wanted to make something I loved and hang it up in my house and be proud of it. I couldn’t think of much but it came time to suck it up and go for it. I woke up this morning and spray painted the whole thing gold. I figured I hadn’t done a self portrait in years. I hated my body for so long but within the past few years I’ve come to love it. I openly talk about my fat. I love the shape of my belly. I never thought this could happen especially since I’m the biggest I’ve ever been. I’ve gone through so much hate and sadness because of my body but it was mainly because I was always taught to hate it. This is an ode to loving myself.

These were my thoughts as I was painting:

UGH! This is going to be hard.

This is taking forever! Why is this canvas so big?

Let’s use a lot of color.

Why am I turning myself purple? I think I just purpled myself. :/

I guess it could be like my haircolor at the moment or the fact that I’m just really loving that color lately but that’s not a very thoughtful/artistic explanation.

OH WAIT! I lied. The drippiness looks great and now I will add more. OOOO they look like stretch marks. PERFECT!

WHOA! But not to sound emo but it’s as if the painting is melting from all the tears I’ve cried about my body. That is actually extremely emo but that’s okay.

But this is not a sad painting. This is a liberating painting. I’m done with those tears.
